FAQs
When I stay at The Hope Center shelter, do I have to leave the property during the day?
We encourage people staying here to be out looking for work and actively pursuing ways out of homelessness. Our porch is open during the day for men seeking respite.

Do you help people find jobs?
We post job information on a bulletin board. We will point you to other organizations specializing in helping people gain employment.

Do you have a place where I can store my belongings so I don't have to carry them all over town?
If you are currently assigned a bed, you will be given a 2' x 2' x 2' locker. Belongings that don't fit in the locker must be removed daily.

Is there someplace in town where I can get meals?
While a guest at The Hope Center, you are provided three free meals a day. This allows you to save your money for your future housing needs. In addition to The Hope Center, a few other places in Hagerstown serve meals.

Do you accept people directly from a hospital or other medical facility?
We do not have medical or clinical services. Anyone coming from a medical facility must be able to self-care for all medical needs and be self-sufficient for daily living requirements.

Do you allow people to come there from jail, prison, or on parole?
Yes, we know that many people being released have nowhere to go, and we, like Jesus, do not discriminate due to your past. If you are on parole from another county, we will ask you to communicate with your current agent and have them seek a transfer before coming to stay here.

Can I bring a vehicle?
You may bring your vehicle and park it here overnight, but it must be off-property during the day. If you have a special circumstance, you may request a short-term exception.

Do you have private rooms?
Unfortunately, due to space limitations, we do not have private rooms. Overnight guests sleep in an open area, and cots/mattresses are given out each night.

How long can I stay?
Guests can stay for up to thirty (30) days if they follow our rules. Following that stay, a guest will need to leave our facility for a minimum of thirty (30) days before becoming eligible to return to the overnight shelter.

What about in the winter months?
The rules for staying are the same as above (30 days in/out policy) except that any available beds will be offered on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Do I have to attend religious services?
Yes, there is a devotional before Soup Line (lunch) and a chapel service before the evening meal. Refusal to attend will cause you to miss a meal or even lose the privilege of staying.
